It is still happening. The massive amount of competition in the market biofilter and fight the spread is the result of a pond operators are bombarded with techno-speak in an attempt to increase sales very affordable pond filters. The latest product I came across prompted me to write this particular article although I wrote on the subject many times. My chemical engineering background has helped me to a great extent separate fact from fiction to many lakes products.
Over the last few years biofilters that use highly excited water chamber containing plastic bottles were to the fore. These filters are relatively expensive and have a good performance, but are too developed for most garden ponds of fish. It is also possible to have a similar effect on the basis DIY once principles are understood. This article attempts to explain the principles.
The reason why this type of pond filter works
This has very little to do with any particular component . However, it has a lot to do with the biological process that takes place in each filter. These advanced filters employ a highly efficient biological processes , which allows mixing of the biofilter media ( the best known is called Kaldnes ) in the circulating water in the pond. When reproducing this process in any field type filter much better results can be obtained with almost any small pieces of plastic that can be excited . The plastic surface is a substrate on which bacteria cling . They stick to any surface .

If the amount of water holding Kaldnes may be upset then Kaldnes remain in suspension. Such a state of suspension is ideal for efficient bio filtration of any kind.
Turbulent mixing Biomedia in polluted water body will allow bacteria and dirt come in very close proximity to each other constantly . This means that the bacteria can spread toxins contained in contaminated water (ammonia and nitrite ) and the resulting toxic chemicals are eliminated immediately to the water interface with the substrate. In other words, the old water now cleaned of bacteria on the substrate is flushed away and is immediately replaced by contaminated water . This new growth of contaminated water is then purified by purification bacteria before again recedes back into the body weight of the water flowing . This process is continuously repeated by the turbulence and mixing efficiency. These impurities in the circulating water is the " food bacterium " (ammonia and nitrite dissolved in the water of the pond , which are metabolic products of fish) . This food is absorbed rapidly hungry bacteria come into contact with contaminated water .
If it were not canvassing bacteria would tend to slow down, trapped in a static environment , while waiting for the food to come along .
Point I am trying to do is show that without mixing water to the edge of the plastic interface is essentially static or dead and biological treatment is therefore impaired. It is stopped in such a static bed , as is the case with most pond filters, but is only slowed down , and is therefore much less effective. To overcome this lack of effectiveness of most ordinary static filters are too big.
Just think about how to work a dishwasher or washing machine . Leave the dirty dishes or clothes in the static pool of water and never clean. Swish the water around and how easily the dirt is removed. This is a simple mechanical rather than biological process, however, but it illustrates the principle of boundary layer dynamics well .

A second major Secret is ... Oxygen in the circulating water in the pond.
These millions and millions of bacteria in every cleaning pond filter system need oxygen , food, and remove affected products for biological treatment , to do a good job. Like us .
In a well- agitated system without extra aeration pond operators will see a great improvement in the pond filter efficiency . When you add more air to water saturated with oxygen, then the bacteria are at their most virulent . They clean the impurities ( ammonia and nitrite ) in no time at all and " Flush " from agitation allows them to start again with fresh oxygen , fresh food and clean water.
This is the key to a large pond filtration .
One of the modern filter uses a venturi system to add oxygen and create mixing time. You can do the same ... Venturi costs a few dollars.
